Abstract Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) serve as communication signals and protect against desiccation. They form complex blends of up to 150 different compounds. Due to differences in molecular packing, CHC classes differ in melting point. Communication is especially important in social insects like ants, which use CHCs to communicate within the colony and to recognize nestmates. Nestmate recognition models often assume a homogenous colony odor, where CHCs are collected, mixed, and redistributed in the postpharyngeal gland (PPG). In the last decades of the eighteenth century, the third act of opera seria was gradually reduced in importance and dimensions until it disappeared altogether. The article studies this process in relation to the repertoire of the San Carlo theatre in Naples from 1771 on, with special attention to the intertwining of dramaturgical choices and audience’s behavior. The examination of a large number of librettos and scores makes it possible to fix reliable chronological terms. After an isolated episode in 1780, the adfirmation of the two-act model can be traced back to the 1786-1787 season. This article analyses the contents of the manuscripts in Latin script found at the Villa Farnese of Caprarola and the Palazzo della Cancelleria of Rome at the death of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520-1589). They were inventoried by Claudio Tobalducci, librarian to the Cardinal; the inventories were edited by Francois Fossier. Although the manuscript collections seem neither organic nor systematically constituted by the Cardinal (the volumes were mainly borrowed from the great Farnese library in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome), the manuscripts were used by the Cardinal in the last years of his life. Some arias by (or attributed to) Caldara were involved in the revival of ancient music which took place between Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century. The most famous of them, “Come raggio di sol”, is likely a forgery in late-Romantic style, as demonstrated through the examination of its literary and musical features. The short piece acquired great celebrity thanks to the soprano Alice Barbi, who performed it in many European capitals; its fortune was so large that it was quoted word by word and commented in a novel by the Italian writer Matilde Serao, “Ella non rispose” (1914).
